Message in a bottle – memobottle

Australia’s $500 million a year bottled water industry comes at a significant cost to the environment, with around 60% of plastic bottles going straight to landfill. Two Australian designers may have an answer with an innovative new product called the memobottle.

Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan Byrt’s memobottle is a reusable water bottle with a slim-line design that makes it convenient to carry. The designers like to think of it as balance between environmental responsibility and improved life convenience.

The designers turned to crowdfunding site Kickstarter to help fund the production of the Memobottle. Their initial goal was to raise $15,000. Within two weeks, they had raised $122,000. By the end of their Kickstarter campaign, they had raised $261,148 thanks to the support of 6,118 backers.

The durable, dishwasher-friendly, long-life water bottle is constructed from BPA-free Tritan. Just like a piece of paper, it can slide into your bag to lie flat next to books and laptops. The memobottle’s sizes also reflect its paper-like shape – it comes in A5, A4 and Letter sizes (the A5 size holds a volume of 750ml and the A4 and Letter each hold 1.25 litres).

“The Memobottle was designed to overcome two problems that we see in our society,” said designers Leeworthy and Byrt. “We have always been disgusted with the overuse of single-use plastic bottles. We developed a passionate desire to reduce their usage and their disastrous effect on the environment.

“Secondly, throughout our schooling and university years, and to a larger extent our professional work life, we have been frustrated with the inability to fit water bottles in carry/laptop bags. Somewhere along the line, there has been a general consensus to design circular shaped bottles. Rather than making a product that fits into this category, we decided to create something that is easy to transport but still holds the functional aspects of traditional bottles.”

All three memobottles are 30mm thick and are completely leak-proof. They are another example of how smart design can be used to solve a problem.
